Can i go around a stud horse when i'm on my period?

Can i go around a stud horse when i'm on my period?! i don't know the horse at all it's one of my friends horses..... i'm just trying to get a filly i'm buying to get used to me... well i started my period today and my dad (he's been raising horse for awhile) said that i shouldn't mess with the horse because i'm on my period... but i can't not mess with her because my period normally last for 8 to 10 days=/ so is it true that the Stud will attack me? what can i do to prevent it? i can't lock him up or anything because their out in a big filed =/ what should i do?!
